History
Brimfield was settled by colonists in 1706, and incorporated in
1731. It was first called "The Plantation adjoining
Springfield to the east of Springfield." It was on the old
stagecoach route (Bay Path) from Boston to the Connecticut River.
One of the earliest public building was the Congregational Church, built
in 1722. A windmill built in 1850 and used as a water pump is
still standing. It is 29 feet high and has a 16 foot wheel.
Hitchcock Academy began in 1855 when Samuel Austin Hitchcock gave
$10,000 to build a grammar school. By 1870 there were 150
students. The school closed in 1955. Brimfield had a few
industries in the late 1700s and 1800s. Now it is rural town with
a picturesque town common. The town grows tremendously three time
a year when the Brimfield Outdoor Antique Shows are held.
