History
Brookfield was originally founded in 1660 as part of the Quaboag
Plantation. Until 1810 Brookfield was the largest town in the
county. In the 19th Century there was a large shoe and boot
industry. Brookfield today is a small community which has evolved
from an agricultural to a bedroom community for the larger cities to the
east and west. The educational and cultural opportunities of these
urban areas are easily accessible from Brookfield. With its lakes
and river and vast tracts of open land, the town has much to offer
nature lovers, sportsmen and those who enjoy a rural way of life.
